Rishabh Pant has received clearance from the BCCI’s medical team to participate in the IPL 2024 season, as confirmed by a media release on Tuesday (March 12). The 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman underwent an extensive 14-month rehabilitation program prescribed by the National Cricket Academy following a serious car accident in December 2022.
According to the board’s statement, Pant has been “declared fit as a wicket-keeper batter for the upcoming TATA IPL 2024.” However, it remains uncertain whether he will take on the wicketkeeping duties for the Delhi Capitals, whom he is expected to lead, succeeding David Warner, who filled in for Pant during his absence last year.
Pant’s return to competitive cricket in the 2024 IPL season will mark his first appearance since the two-Test series against Bangladesh at the end of 2022, just before the unfortunate incident that led to his injuries.
Meanwhile, the BCCI’s release also confirmed that fast bowler Prasidh Krishna will miss the tournament after undergoing surgery on his left proximal quadriceps tendon. This setback marks the second consecutive season that the 28-year-old will be absent for the Rajasthan Royals, following a lumbar stress fracture that sidelined him last year.
In other IPL-related news, Gujarat Titans’ pace bowler Mohammed Shami is set to miss the entire tournament due to surgery on his right heel. The BCCI’s medical team will monitor his progress closely, especially with India’s T20 World Cup campaign scheduled immediately after the IPL.
